If you’re planning to study in Canada, there’s an important update you need to know.
As of September 1, 2025, international students applying for a Canadian study permit will need to show a higher amount of financial support to meet cost-of-living requirements, according to a recent announcement by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).

What’s Changing?
The minimum funds required for living expenses (excluding tuition and travel costs) will increase significantly. For example:
📌 A single applicant will now need to show at least CAN$22,895, up from the current CAN$20,635.
This increase applies in addition to the first year’s tuition and round-trip travel costs.
The update applies to all provinces and territories outside of Quebec.
This change reflects Canada’s ongoing adjustments to keep up with the rising cost of living.
Updated Financial Requirements by Family Size
Family Members (including the student) | Minimum Funds Required (per year) |
1 | CAN$22,895 |
2 | CAN$28,502 |
3 | CAN$35,040 |
4 | CAN$42,543 |
5 | CAN$48,252 |
6 | CAN$54,420 |
7 | CAN$60,589 |
Each additional person (8+) | CAN$6,170 |
➡️ These new amounts take effect from September 1, 2025.
Applications submitted before that date are still assessed based on the current 2024 requirement (CAN$20,635 for a single applicant).
Why This Matters
Failing to meet the financial requirements is one of the most common reasons for study permit refusals. So, if you’re applying on or after September 1, 2025, make sure you are prepared to show proof of the updated financial threshold.
Planning ahead is now more important than ever — especially if you’re bringing family members with you.
