Thinking about staying in Canada after graduation? If you're in a STEM field, Express Entry might be your best shot—but the rules just changed. Here’s what’s new and how you can still qualify.

What Is the STEM Category?

Canada’s Express Entry system lets skilled workers apply for permanent residency. In 2023, Canada added “category-based selection” to target applicants with experience in specific areas. One of the top categories? STEM — Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. In February 2025, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) updated the list of qualifying STEM jobs. Some were added. Others were removed.

What Jobs Are on the 2025 STEM List?

Only 11 occupations now qualify:

  • Architecture and science managers (NOC 20011)

  • Civil engineers (NOC 21300)

  • Civil engineering technologists and technicians (NOC 22300)

  • Cybersecurity specialists (NOC 21220)

  • Electrical and electronics engineers (NOC 21310)

  • Electrical and electronics technologists (NOC 22310)

  • Geological engineers (NOC 21331)

  • Industrial and manufacturing engineers (NOC 21321)

  • Insurance agents and brokers (NOC 63100)

  • Mechanical engineers (NOC 21301)

  • Mechanical engineering technologists and technicians (NOC 22301)

If your field isn’t listed, you’ll need to apply through a different Express Entry program or check other immigration options.

How Do You Qualify?

To be eligible for the STEM category:

  • You need at least 6 months of full-time continuous work experience (or equivalent part-time) in one of the listed jobs

  • That experience must be within the last 3 years

  • You must meet the basic eligibility for one of these Express Entry programs:

    • Canadian Experience Class (CEC)

    • Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP)

    • Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP)

How to Check If You Qualify

Step 1: Find Your NOC Code

  • Go to the Government of Canada NOC site

  • Use the search bar to type your job title

  • Check if the NOC matches your job description

Step 2: Compare Job Duties

  • Review the “lead statement” and “main duties” under your NOC

  • You need to have done a substantial number of those duties to count

Step 3: Confirm STEM Eligibility

  • Check that your NOC is on the 2025 STEM list

  • If yes, and your work experience fits, you may qualify for a STEM-specific Express Entry invitation

Why It Matters

Express Entry draws are competitive. Getting selected in a STEM-specific draw can boost your chances—especially if you’re a recent grad with Canadian work experience. Planning early helps. If your job isn’t on the list, consider switching to a listed NOC or exploring other immigration pathways, like Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs).
